Legal Advocacy and Community Support Continue for Harjinder Singh
UNITED SIKHS continues to monitor and advocate on behalf of Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old truck driver currently facing charges in Florida after a fatal accident.
Harjinder, who has been held without bail since the tragic accident on August 12, 2025, remains in custody. His legal defense team in Florida is retained by UNITED SIKHS, whose mission is to protect the civil and human rights of all people in need. UNITED SIKHS is also working with allied civil rights organizations to ensure Harjinder receives a fair trial and due process.
“In America, justice applies to everyone, no matter where you come from or how you got here. The Constitution protects all people who find themselves within the jurisdiction of the United States when they face serious criminal charges. They have the right to a fair trial, a lawyer, and due process under the law. These rights aren’t just legal technicalities; they are what make our justice system fair and accountable,” stated Florida’s preeminent criminal defense attorney, Natalie Knight-Tai, an attorney UNITED SIKHS retained on behalf of Harjinder as his lead defense attorney.
UNITED SIKHS reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the rights of Harjinder Singh through a comprehensive, three-fold approach. First, through sustained legal advocacy, the organization is working to ensure Singh’s constitutional protections are upheld. Second, UNITED SIKHS continues to stand beside Singh’s family, activating community networks, diaspora solidarity and outreach efforts rooted in compassion and collective resolve. Finally, the organization remains actively engaged in public education, countering misinformation and challenging xenophobic narratives that have surfaced in the aftermath of the incident.
Consistent with its longstanding mission to uphold civil and human rights and serve those in need, UNITED SIKHS is also offering assistance to the families of the victims who may require support with funeral arrangements. This act of solidarity reflects the organization’s belief that justice must be paired with compassion and that dignity and care should be extended to all those in need.
“We grieve for the lives lost and stand firmly for justice, for all parties affected,” said Tejinder Bains, a veteran criminal defense attorney and a key member of Harjinder’s legal defense team. Mr. Bains, who is Sikh and has had a criminal defense practice in New York City for over 35 years, will petition the Florida court for pro hac vice admission in Harjinder’s case.
“Our role is to ensure that Harjinder, like every individual who has been imprisoned, receives fair treatment regardless of immigration status or background,” states Wanda Sanchez Day, UNITED SIKHS’ Chief Legal Officer, a long-time national civil rights leader, and a member of Harjinder’s legal defense team.
“Over three million signatures have been collected in support of Harjinder’s right to a fair trial and a fair outcome after trial. This shows that the people of the United States know what is at stake. If we do not defend constitutional freedoms for everyone, we risk losing those same freedoms for ourselves someday,” she said.
