Youths Spreading Sikh Awareness and Fighting Against Bullying
- Students Grades 5-12 given the opportunity to spread Sikh awareness

Fremont, California- UNITED SIKHS and Not In Our Town (NIOT) is proud to announce the winning video of our Sikh Youth Voices Promoting Diversity- Video Contest – “Stand Up, Speak Up and End Bullying” which was produced, written and edited by Sahib Singh, Tejpaul Singh, Ajay Singh, Zachary Haliburton, Sharif Dacus and Terry Ton.
Earlier this year, Sikh youths, who are the prime victims of school bullying, were given the opportunity to take charge and create Sikh awareness in schools. “Sikh students have the knowledge and are well equipped to spread the word about Sikhism. They are in the best position to educate their peers, which in turn will lead to uprooting of racism and discrimination in schools,” said UNITED SIKHS Legal Director Manwinder Singh. With the drive to educate starting with the youths, UNITED SIKHS in partnership with Not In Our Town (NIOT) organized a Sikh Youth Voices Promoting Diversity- Video Contest.
The participants and winners were very enthusiastic about entering the contest and making videos that will help take the next step to stop bullying. “As adults, it is our duty to reach out to our younger brothers and sisters to make sure they are not victims of any form of bullying,” said Ajay Singh, contest winner. Because of the hate crime attacks on Sikhs post 9/11, Sikh youths have suffered bullying nationwide. Contest winner, Sahib Singh, encourages his peers by saying, “I challenge you to Stand Up, Speak Up and End Bullying.”
“This contest gave students the opportunity to tell their story to their peers and help them in dealing with hate and religion,” said Dr. Becki Cohn-Vargas, Director of Not In Our School. Dr. Cohn-Vargas continued “This is just the beginning in the fight to end bullying.”
An award ceremony, held at the Gurdwara Sahib in Fremont, CA, announced the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and awarded them with prizes. Their videos are also placed on UNITED SIKHS and NIOS websites for use in classrooms across the country and the world. The videos will have a lesson plan to go with them as the new school year begins in August.
