UNITED SIKHS Condemns Hate Crime Incident in Queens, NYC
NEW YORK – UNITED SIKHS strongly condemns a recent hate crime attack in Queens, where a Sikh bus rider was brutally assaulted on Sunday, October 15, 2023, solely due to his religious attire, including a turban. The victim, a 19-year-old Sikh person identified by NYPD, was riding an MTA shuttle bus at 118th Street and Liberty Avenue in South Ozone Park around 9 a.m. when he was singled out over his turban.
This deeply disturbing incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need to combat hate and discrimination and promote unity and tolerance within our communities. “Such a hate crime attack in Queens is a painful reminder that even in a free world, minority groups continue to be the target of hate crimes simply because of what they look like and what they wear,” said Dr. Henok Gabisa, UNITED SIKHS’ Civil Rights Advocacy Director. “We will continue to work with authorities and the family of the victim to ensure that justice is served.”
The victim of this heinous attack was targeted for no reason other than his appearance, affirming the disturbing trend of hate crimes on the rise. UNITED SIKHS is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of the individual who was victimized due to his very identity.
UNITED SIKHS Civil Rights Department is actively investigating the matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and the victim receives the appropriate legal remedy. This commitment to seeking justice for the victim is an integral part of our organization’s mission.
In response to this incident, UNITED SIKHS reiterates its commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of all individuals, regardless of their background. The organization calls for solidarity and understanding among diverse communities and stands firmly against discrimination and violence in all its forms.
UNITED SIKHS CEO, Mr. Gurpreet Singh, expressed his concern, saying, “The recent hate crime attack in Queens is a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to promote tolerance and unity. Our organization is dedicated to combating hate and advocating for the rights of our community members to live freely. We call upon all members of our society to stand together against discrimination and violence.”
Please support our advocacy efforts for the community.
