South Metropolitan TAFE and UNITED SIKHS Celebrate Sikh Civil Liberties Advocate Recognition
Perth, Western Australia – August 12, 2025
South Metropolitan TAFE proudly hosted a two-hour information session on the Sikh way of life on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, conducted by Mandeep Singh of UNITED SIKHS. This event, organized by the International Student Support Centre, welcomed Sikh international students, providing vital information on accessing Kirpan Cards and navigating industry standards for professional job opportunities in fields such as Aviation, Culinary, Bakery, and Trades after graduating from Technical and Further Education (TAFE).

The session offered an in-depth exploration of the Sikh faith, focusing on the practical observance of the five mandatory articles of faith, including the Kirpan, and their application in professional and educational settings. Staff and students had the opportunity to engage with Mandeep Singh, ask questions, and address concerns, gaining valuable insights into the cultural and practical aspects of Sikhism.
This event was inspired by the exceptional efforts of Ms. Lauren Wade, an International Student Support Officer at South Metropolitan TAFE. Ms. Wade went above and beyond her role to assist an initiated Sikh student in obtaining a Kirpan Card through UNITED SIKHS. Demonstrating professionalism, dignity, and compassion, she provided the student with closure and support while fostering greater understanding of Sikh practices within the TAFE community. Her initiative led to the collaboration with UNITED SIKHS to deliver this informative session, enriching the cultural awareness of both staff and students.
In recognition of her outstanding commitment to supporting Sikh students and promoting cultural inclusivity, UNITED SIKHS is honored to present Ms. Lauren Wade with the Sikh Civil Liberties Advocate award. This recognition celebrates her dedication to ensuring Sikh students can practice their faith with dignity and access the resources they need to succeed academically and professionally.
Mandeep Singh, representative of UNITED SIKHS, stated:
“Ms. Lauren Wade’s proactive approach and genuine care for the Sikh student community exemplify the spirit of inclusivity and understanding. Her efforts have paved the way for greater awareness and support for Sikh students at South Metropolitan TAFE, and we are proud to recognize her as a Sikh Civil Liberties Advocate.”
South Metropolitan TAFE remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all students, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive.
