Sikh Community Remembers Congressman Tom Lantos’ Contribution to Civil Rights
New York, NY – UNITED SIKHS extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Congressman Tom Lantos, a celebrated champion of the environment and human rights, who passed away on Monday after an illness.
“Congressman Lantos was instrumental in changing the TSA’s turban screening policies, thereby protecting Sikh religious freedoms,” stated Harpreet Singh, Legal Director of UNITED SIKHS. “Congressman Lantos’ own personal experiences with intolerance and religious persecution formed the strong foundation of his unwavering commitment to religious pluralism and human rights.”
A survivor of the holocaust and a scholar, Congressman Lantos served as the chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs, was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and was the Founding Co-Chair of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
UNITED SIKHS joins family members, colleagues, and well-wishers of Congressman Lantos at this time of loss to remember a good man and an honorable statesman.
