FREE FOOD DRIVE FOR ALL – ELIMINATE HUNGER WITH GURU KA LANGAR Every Saturday from 11am to 1pm. at Spice Village Indian Restaurant in Belmont WA
| Belmont, West Australia:Langar symbolizes the recognition of the human race as one, since anyone irrespective of caste, creed, race, or religion can partake in Langar. This is why in Sikh Gurdwaras (Sikh Houses of Worship), all who partake in Langar sit on the floor denoting that no one is above or beneath anyone else. All the food is prepared by dedicated volunteers and there is no cost to those who partake. |
| Sikhism is a faith which promotes peace, seeks social justice and implements love for one’s neighbor into practice. It believes in one God and was founded 550 years ago by Guru (prophet) Nanak Sahib Ji. He was succeeded by 9 other Gurus. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the living Guru of Sikhs. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, gave his followers, the Sikhs, three key principles to abide by: Kirat Karo (earn your living by honest means)Naam Japo (recite the name of God and see him in all living beings)Vand Shako (share your honestly earned livings with others). | The 9 other prophets followed this tradition. Guru Nanak himself practiced these principles and in this unique way the prophets of Sikhs led a life of setting examples for others. Guru Nanak himself started the Guru ka Langar (free food for all) concept which as old as the religion – an attribute unique to Sikhism. The Guru ka Langar concept invites people of different casts, gender, social and financial status and race to sit together on the same level and eat together thus directly challenging discrimination of any sort. Today Sikhs all over the world serve Guru Ka Langar (inside and outside Gurudwara’s – Sikh places of worship) to countless number of people of all backgrounds. |
| Food is also a very vital part of the Punjabi Culture. When we offer free food to our community patrons, we attempt to provide them their basic needs. Friendships are formed when we stand with our patrons in need. |
| On one such occasion, the member of parliament for Belmont WA, Ms Cassandra Rowe visited us on our food drive. She acknowledged UNITED SIKHS for their effort and expressed her gratitude for providing free food to the community. A special function hosted by UNITED SIKHS was also attended by other dignitaries and most importantly our Sikh Community Leaders. It was for the first time two community leaders of different background sat together and discussed the way forward for both communities to work together in harmony and peace. |
| UNITED SIKHS WA volunteers have extended this same concept and we are now serving our local community patrons. This is our way of giving back to the community – the third principle taught to us by Guru Nanak. We are always ready to offer aid to any one at any time.
