World continues to reaffirm the myths about all lives being equal and All are having equality of rights. One such living state is in Delta, Nigeria, where most of the population have limited or no access to the most basic amenities. The people living here have precarious and unrelenting day-to-day struggle for survival. |
UNITED SIKHS engineering project team member, Kamaljit Singh initiated a clothing drive in the remote areas of Delta State in Nigeria after assessing the situation of the families. According to the digital service of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), ReliefWeb (1),Violence has been the bane of the region where conflicts have been occurring for over four decades. Beginning from the pre-colonial period, the region has witnessed a series of conflicts, which had their roots, initially in the protest against injustice, and in recent years in the quest for resource control. According to the Amnesty International Report (2), the conflict between the military and the armed group continues to generate a humanitarian crisis affecting over 14 million people. The security forces commit serious human rights violations including extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances. |
The police and military on the other hand commit torture and other ill-treatment with harsh conditions in military detention. Communal violence occurring in many parts of the country leading to a forceful eviction of thousands of people from their homes. As per the World Report 2017 (3), Most of the 2.5 million internally displaced people (IDPs) lack basic rights such as rights to food, shelter, education, healthcare, protection from harm, as well as the right to freedom of movement. |

UNITED SIKHS sevadars have not given up on their mission and pursued the project of upbringing the spiritual, social and economic empowerment of underprivileged and minority communities here. It is indeed a humongous task and needs all the helping hands possible to reach out to these remote and forgotten areas in bringing a change and making a WAKE-UP call to the officials to ACT NOW, and all excuses later! |
