Bandhi Chhor Diwas Inspires a Legacy of Courage and Service to Humanity

New York, N.Y. | October 20,  2025

As homes and hearts across the world glow with Diwali lights, UNITED SIKHS joins the global Sikh community in commemorating Bandhi Chhor Diwas – a day rooted in liberation, justice, and the enduring power of collective service.

Bandhi Chhor Diwas, meaning “Day of Liberation,” honors the historic release of Guru Hargobind Sahib from Gwalior Fort in 1619, along with 52 unjustly imprisoned Hindu Kings. Guru Sahib refused freedom for himself alone, insisting that all political prisoners be released at the same time. This act of moral courage transformed the day into a living symbol of shared justice and fearless advocacy – values that continue to guide Sikh communities and humanitarian efforts worldwide.

UNITED SIKHS channels the spirit of Bandhi Chhor Diwas year-round through global programs that uplift, protect, and empower people across the globe. Guided by the Sikh principle of Miri-Piri,  the inseparable union of spiritual wisdom and temporal responsibility, we respond to injustice and suffering with both compassion and action.  From mobile medical units serving flood-affected families in Punjab to disaster relief operations in Pakistan, Texas, and North Carolina, our teams respond with compassion and urgency. We invest in youth leadership through mentorship and education, spotlighting changemakers whose work funds relief and inspires student-led action. Our civil rights advocacy defends Sikh truckers, students, and workers facing discrimination, while our engagement with the United Nations amplifies survivor voices to shape global policy. Through langar outreach in refugee camps and shelters, we extend dignity and nourishment –because freedom is incomplete without compassion.

In a world still grappling with injustice and displacement, Bandhi Chhor Diwas reminds us that true liberation is collective. It is a living mandate to serve, protect, and uplift.

UNITED SIKHS invites all communities to reflect on the deeper meaning of this day.

Whether through lighting candles, sharing langar, or standing up for human rights, Bandhi Chhor Diwas offers a powerful opportunity to renew our commitment to courage, equity, and global solidarity.
