Illinois adopts House Resolution denouncing the attacks against Sikh Americans – UNITED SIKHS applauded for its advocacy

- Illinois House Resolution 1193 acknowledges the massacre in Wisconsin was a deplorable act of violence and hate.
- It acknowledges the American Sikh community’s long standing commitment to the United States.
- It acknowledges the massacre in Wisconsin, and other racially motivated attacks, have caused Sikhs and other communities to live under an unfair burden of vulnerability.
- It denounces hate-fueled violence and encourages civic engagement and participation among the immigrant and minority communities of Illinois.
- It seeks to create greater awareness among the general public about Sikhs and other minority communities.

UNITED SIKHS would like to extend an invitation to all members of the local community to join the Commemoration of Illinois House Resolution 1193 on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at: Sikh Religious Society Gurdwara Sahib, 1280 Winnetka Street, Palatine, Illinois.
UNITED SIKHS commends the Illinois House of Representatives for adopting House Resolution 1193 (HR 1193), denouncing the deplorable attacks on Sikh Americans and and denouncing hate crimes and hateful political rhetoric.
UNITED SIKHS appreciates the opportunity to collaborate in the advocacy and drafting of this resolution, and we look forward to working again with the South Asian American Policy & Research Institute (SAAPRI) and the Illinois House Legislature on further measures that will help safeguard the rights of Sikh and other minority communities.
“This legislation is an acknowledgement of the racially motivated atrocities that have been committed and a commitment by the state of Illinois to devote resources to educating the greater Illinois community on Sikh Americans and South Asian Americans”, said Ekta Arneja, Midwest Regional Coordinator of UNITED SIKHS.
UNITED SIKHS will continue to engage in advocacy and legislative efforts throughout the United States to help maintain and expand the civil and human rights of the Sikhs and other communities. We request the community to support us on these efforts.
