UNITED SIKHS Calls for Balance, Dignity, and Solidarity in the
Aftermath of the Tragic Florida Highway Incident on August 12, 2025

Florida, USA | August 23, 2025 – UNITED SIKHS expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident on Florida’s Turnpike on August 12, 2025, involving Harjinder Singh, a Sikh truck driver from Stockton,California. The pain of losing loved ones in such circumstances is immeasurable, and our hearts go out to the immediate families affected. The Sikh community mourns this loss alongside them and stands in solidarity in their grief. UNITED SIKHS has reached out to the families of the victims to share in their pain and offer humanitarian assistance during this difficult time.

UNITED SIKHS is deeply concerned about the way this tragedy has been politicized and weaponized in the ongoing divide between “red” and “blue” states, and in the amplification of anti-immigration rhetoric. While acknowledging that Mr. Singh may have made a serious error on the road, it is unjust and irresponsible to turn this incident into an indictment of an entire faith community or immigrant population.

The situation was further compounded by the manner in which Mr. Singh was presented to the public, shown in custody without his turban. For Sikhs, the turban is a sacred article of faith. Its removal in such circumstances strips an individual of dignity, identity, and religious freedom. UNITED SIKHS views this as a violation of cultural and spiritual rights and calls for greater sensitivity in law enforcement protocols.

Traffic errors and road tragedies, though heartbreaking, occur across America and involve individuals from all backgrounds. These incidents are rarely used to malign entire communities. To single out Sikhs or immigrants in this case, and to use the suffering of victims’ families as a platform for political scapegoating, is both insensitive and discriminatory.

UNITED SIKHS stands firmly with the victims’ families, offering condolences and support during this unimaginable time. The organization also affirms the dignity and rights of Harjinder Singh, who deserves fair treatment, cultural respect, and due process under the law. One individual’s mistake must not be used to mock or vilify an entire community.

Moving forward, UNITED SIKHS calls on law enforcement agencies and policymakers to ensure that all individuals in custody, including Sikhs, are treated with cultural sensitivity and respect for their Articles of Faith. The organization urges leaders to resist politicizing tragedies for partisan or anti-immigrant agenda and to promote fairness, equality, and justice in public discourse.
